Russia Fails to Respond to Nuclear Fallout; 20,000 Reported Dead in Kingisepp

The international community is outraged at Russia’s negligence in addressing the nuclear fallout from the Leningrad meltdown. US Government officials have noted Russia’s near immediate movement of troops away from areas with high radiation readings. No evacuation measures were issued to Russian cities in the path of the fallout. Kingisepp was hit especially hard by the fallout and death tolls continue to rise.
Aid workers and reporters on the scene have reported a death toll of 20,000 Russian citizens, with another 100,000 citizens not expected to live through the effects of radiation over the course of the next five days.
Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has expressed his severe disapproval in the Russian administration over this failure, calling it “the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.” Kingisepp is currently inaccessible to humanitarian aid groups due to the severity of the fallout.
Russian officials have yet to comment on the events in Kingisepp. ▪
